Handel's variations are characterized by an increasing number of notes and rising tension as they progress. This Chaconne is no exception. Starting from the theme, gradually increase the tension towards Var. 10.
Furthermore, let's analyze the original theme. This 8-measure theme can be analyzed as being divided into four phrases of two measures each. Each measure, in D minor, is as follows:
- 1 i.
- 2 V.
- 3 V/iv
- 4 iv.
- 5 V/III.
- 6 III.
- 7 V.
- 8 i
Among these, measures 3-4 and 5-6 contain borrowed chords. However, measures 3-4 are perceived as being higher in pitch and having greater harmonic tension than measures 5-6. Therefore, measures 3-4 should be treated as the peak point, with the direction gradually declining thereafter.
Specifically, after measures 3-4, try changing the color and mood for measures 5-6.
