A work acknowledged by Haydn as his own in 1803. However, the first edition was published with a violin accompaniment.
First Movement
C major, 2/4 time
In two-part form, the first half presents an ornamental theme in C major, which is then repeated in the dominant key. This is followed by a short musical idea, too weak in character to be considered a secondary theme, placed in the dominant key (G major) (m. 13-).
In the second half, a modulation process from the dominant to the tonic key occurs, utilizing the opening theme, and the opening theme returns in the tonic key (m. 39-).
Second Movement
C major, Minuet, 3/4 time
Consists of a main section based on triplets, and a trio in the parallel minor, C minor.
Although the trio section is in C minor, the key signature with two flats is a remnant of modal writing.
Third Movement
C major, Sonata Form, 2/4 time
The principal theme begins with an accompaniment of arpeggiated triads and their broken forms. A transition section (m. 11-) to establish the dominant key, and two distinct secondary ideas in G minor and G major (m. 21-/m. 27-) are also clearly present, with the first half marked for repetition by a repeat sign.
The second half features a transition process from the dominant to the tonic key using the principal theme, followed by the return of the principal theme (m. 59-) and secondary ideas (m. 78-/m. 85-) in the tonic key, and is also marked with a repeat sign.
