Composed in 1928. "In the Style of a Romance (Dans le style romance)". In 12/8 time, in the style of a barcarolle. G-sharp minor.
A work imbued with a languid, Catalan-esque melancholy. Over undulating ascending arpeggios of eighth notes, an impressive melody descends stepwise, sung sporadically, while the sound of an added-sixth chord lends a mysterious, evocative expression. Prompted by a contrapuntal inner voice moving in contrary motion, the melody transforms into a duet in thirds. After a climax, it modulates chromatically to F-sharp major, concluding with an added-ninth chord in C-sharp major, leaving a faint lingering resonance. Mompou, who grew up listening to the complex metallic sounds of bells in his grandfather's bell foundry from childhood, demonstrates a unique sensibility for added chords reminiscent of bells. Despite being only 12 measures long, this piece is an excellent example that clearly showcases the charm of Mompou's sonorities.
Furthermore, Mompou taught his students the importance of listening to the resonance of sounds. "The sound is not at its strongest and most beautiful precisely at the very first moment it is produced. (...) From the very first moment the hammer strikes the string, the vibration, accompanied by resonance, follows an ascending curve, reaches its peak, and then follows a descending curve. It is these nuances that one must know how to bring to life. The secret of sound is hidden in this limited, narrow space between two notes."
