Although no tempo markings are indicated in the composer's score, the tempo for the opening 2/2 section and its return at measure 137 should be the same and rather slow. Conversely, the 3/8 section starting from measure 18 can be taken at a faster tempo.
Measures 1-17 and 137-146 strongly evoke a French Overture with their sharp dotted rhythms. Play these sections with a somewhat improvisatory feel, yet without breaking the pulse, maintaining dignity, and with a grand, orchestral scale.
The 3/8 section starting from measure 17 should be conceived in units of several measures. This is merely an example, but try to create sections as you feel them, for instance: one unit for measures 18-21 (4 measures), one for measures 22-25 (4 measures), one for measures 26-31 (6 measures), one for measures 32-39 (8 measures), and so on.
As many descending sequences appear, try to apply subtle dynamic changes accordingly. The 3/8 section, at the very least, does not convey a serious emotion. You are encouraged to express joy.
