This collection is likely Henselt's most well-known work. Even into the 20th century, especially No. 6, "If I were a bird, I would fly to you," was cherished by many pianists as an encore piece. Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) also once recorded this piece. The German first edition, published by Kistner, featured poetic French titles for each piece, expressing the atmosphere of each work. However, the French first edition by Lemoine did not include such titles, and it remains uncertain whether these titles were the composer's intention or the publisher's. In terms of etude writing, it is categorized as "Chopin-esque," repeating specific rhythmic patterns, yet the meticulously crafted melodies evoke a unique emotional quality. The performance technique is by no means moderate; with continuous arpeggios exceeding two octaves (No. 1) and combinations of repeated notes and octaves (No. 9), it is quite an ambitious work for an etude from 1838. It was dedicated to the King of Bavaria, who generously supported the young Henselt's studies, as an expression of gratitude.
