Litany, written in 1989, is a reconstruction from memory of Takemitsu's public debut work, Two Lento, composed in 1950 (the original score of which is lost).
The premiere of Two Lento is famously known for receiving a harsh critique from Ginji Yamane, who declared it "pre-music." Takemitsu's music, characterized by a unique "breathing" that deviates from metric structures, was already strongly evident at this early stage. However, the scattering of melodic fragments consisting of clear pentatonic scales is a sound characteristic of his earliest works. This can be seen as an influence from pre-war composers. On the other hand, the modal elements and treatment of chords in the second piece often point to the influence of Messiaen's music, with which Takemitsu had early exposure.
Both the first and second pieces are framed by a heavy, solemn image of "death," yet soft and warm chords resonate throughout. Performance requires careful attention to the continuity of melodic lines, the resonance of chords, and a keen ear for the delicate passage of time as sounds emerge and fade.
