This is an extremely serious, powerful, and innovative first movement. It is by no means optimistic.
While Haydn's string quartets are often given unique nicknames such as 'Lark' or 'Frog,' if such a nickname were to be given to this first movement, some interpret it as 'Bear.'
This interpretation is said to be based on the powerful bass, strong left-hand chords, and similar elements. If one concurs with this, there is no need to aim for a particularly refined rendition; rather, a more unadorned, wild character seems more fitting for this first movement.
Specifically for this first movement, one might consider showcasing a different side of Haydn, and consequently, it is permissible to play forte without reservation.
While there is tension, there are also sentimental passages and moments of momentary relief, such as in measures 10-12. Therefore, please also bring out the contrast in these moods.

The first movement in B minor is in Allegro moderato tempo and 4/4 time. The right hand in the opening two measures features a melody primarily based on the tonic and dominant. In contrast, the second theme is characterized by chromatic movement. In the development section (from m. 29), the first theme is primarily treated, followed by chromatic movement, an element of the second theme, sustaining the dominant, and leading to the recapitulation (from m. 48).
