Although this sarabande is a piece with a rather slow tempo, its underlying structure becomes clear through segmented analysis. The phrases are considered to progress in 4-measure units.
Measures 1-4: G minor, imperfect cadence
Measures 5-8: B-flat major, perfect cadence
Measures 9-12: B-flat major or C minor, imperfect cadence
Measures 13-16: C minor, perfect cadence
Measures 17-20: G minor, imperfect cadence
Measures 21-24: G minor, perfect cadence
Measures 25-28: G minor, imperfect cadence
Measures 29-32: G minor, perfect cadence
Do you notice that perfect and imperfect cadences alternate? Based on these characteristics, we will determine the dynamics. I feel that the B-flat major sections could benefit from a slightly softer tone quality or volume. Although measure 24 is a perfect cadence, the tension builds between measures 21 and 22, so resolving (i.e., decreasing volume) is not necessarily implied just because it's a perfect cadence. Please try to be creative in determining the dynamics in these areas.
