The middle section spans from measures 9 to 31 and has no repeat. All other sections, however, feature repeats, and it is no exaggeration to say that how these repeats are interpreted determines the character of this piece.
Fundamentally, as the movement itself is characterized by a light and fast tempo, appropriate articulation should be applied.
There are two types of repeat sections:
- those that repeat in 2-measure units, and
- those that repeat in 4-measure units.
In the sections that repeat in 4-measure units, three measures form an ascending sequence, and the left hand plays octaves, which increases the tension more than in the 2-measure unit sections.
However, the 2-measure unit sections are also ascending in nature, and the tension increases as the music progresses.
Regardless, it is crucial not to play the repeats exactly the same way as the first time. Try to introduce some variation.
Finally, at measure 35, when playing the second time of the repeat, try to significantly broaden (slow down) the tempo and conclude with a dignified ending in forte.
