Although the Sarabande and Double constitute a single piece, it is desirable for the Double to be perceived as an extension of the Sarabande upon its entry. Therefore, let us consider how to effectively unify these two sections.
The Sarabande features numerous weighty chords, suggesting an intention to convey a certain solemnity. Chords such as those in measures 5 and 13 may even be arpeggiated. It is perfectly acceptable to take ample time without rushing.
Conversely, the Double should progress with a sense of forward momentum. While this may not necessarily entail an increase in tempo, the aim is to propel the music forward and eliminate any sense of heaviness. This approach will heighten the tension and allow the Double to be heard as a natural continuation of the Sarabande.
The tempo of the Sarabande might even be determined by working backward from the Double's tempo. That is, one could establish a comfortable tempo for the Double, ensuring it does not become excessively slow, and then perform the Sarabande in accordance with that established tempo.
