The tempo is a crucial consideration in this prelude. Although arpeggios are notated, the speed of these arpeggios also influences the tempo. If it is too slow, it will create a discrepancy with the subsequent notes; if it is too fast, the ear will not be able to follow the harmonic changes. Although it is in 2/4 time, a tempo of approximately quarter note = 30 would be appropriate. The piece also exhibits semi-deconstructive progressions, so it should be interpreted not with an optimistic mood, but rather with a certain sense of sorrow.
This prelude contains numerous suspensions. These suspensions should be emphasized, and since the notes following them are resolutions, they should be played softer than the suspensions.
These locations are:
- Measure 1, beat 2: Right hand G
- Measure 2, beat 2: Right hand F
- Measure 3, beat 2: Right hand B
- Measure 6, beat 1: Right hand D and F, Left hand D; beat 2: Right hand C
- Measure 7, beat 1: Right hand B
The performer should treat measures 5-6 as the peak point, building towards it and then gradually receding from it.
