A work from around 1884, when he was in his twenties. This was before he began his brilliant career as a pianist, a period when he was diligently studying piano and composition. Nevertheless, he was already a piano teacher and had formed friendships with prominent musicians of the time, such as Richard Strauss, Anton Rubinstein, and Sarasate. The valuable connections and experiences he cultivated during this period further nurtured his talents as a composer, performer, and educator. Soon after, immense popularity awaited him as a pianist.
Many of his early works, including "Album of May," bear programmatic titles. They are characterized by the use of folk melodies and imaginative scene descriptions. This Scherzino is a refreshing piece, true to its title. Its light melody is adorned with high-pitched embellishments, interspersed with floating double stops and arpeggios in the middle section.
