Excluding his earliest lost works, this is Mozart's first piano sonata. The first to sixth sonatas were composed as a series in early 1775 in Munich, commissioned by Baron Dürnitz.
The key of this sonata is C major. Notably, for the first four of the six sonatas, the key of each subsequent piece is a fifth below (subdominant) that of the preceding one: No. 2 is in F major, No. 3 in B-flat major, and No. 4 in E-flat major. Conversely, No. 5 is in the key a fifth above (dominant) that of No. 1 (C major), and No. 6 is in D major, a further fifth above that.
All three movements are in sonata form. While arpeggios, decorative sixteenth-note passages, and ornaments recall Baroque harpsichord music, the presence of dynamic contrasts and the juxtaposition of staccato and legato are also evident. These characteristics suggest that the work was intended for performance on the piano.
