Saint-Saëns's first published piano work, composed in 1855. The mysterious opening, which disorients the sense of tonality, recurs in the finale, lending unity to the work. While Schumanninfluence is discernible, Saint-Saëns's expressive power had already reached maturity at the age of 19. It was published in 1856 by S. Richault in two volumes. Later, it was reissued as a single volume, edited by Isidor Philipp, by Durand (1885).
