Although its authenticity is doubted, Haydn himself acknowledged it as genuine in 1803. The first movement uses the third movement of Sonata No. 4, but some opinions (MGG2) suggest that the trio of the third movement (Minuet) is of doubtful authenticity.
Please also refer to 'Alternative Versions of the Same Work?' in the composer's commentary.
(First Movement) G major, 3/8 time
Composed in da capo form, it consists of a main section in G major (up to bar 24) and a middle section in the parallel minor (G minor) (bars 25-48).
(Second Movement) G minor, 4/4 time (2/2 time)
An Andante movement in G minor. In binary form, the latter half modulates to the parallel major, B-flat major (from bar 21), after which the theme returns in the tonic key.
The establishment of tonality by a dominant pedal point just before the theme's return in G minor (from bar 39), and the form where the main section and the section after the middle part are each repeated, are common features in classical sonata form movements.
(Third Movement) G major, Minuet, 3/4 time
The main section is in binary form, consisting of an 8-bar theme and its repetition, a developmental section (from bar 9), the theme's return (from bar 17), and its repetition. The trio section modulates to the parallel minor, E minor, and its structure is similar to that of the main section (this musical structure resonates with the first movement).
