The original piece for No. 4, 'Arpeggio' (E major), is Caprice No. 1 from 24 Caprices. Like other pieces, this one also shows significant differences between its first and revised editions; furthermore, the first edition itself exists in two versions. In the first version of the first edition, the arpeggios consist of single notes played by both hands moving in parallel, whereas the second version of the first edition upgrades to arpeggios of chords and double stops. It can be described as a piece of extreme difficulty.
