This set of Four Mazurkas, Op. 41, is dedicated to Mr. Étienne Witwicki.
The first piece, in C-sharp minor, is marked Maestoso. It is a characteristic mazur in the Phrygian mode, and non-harmonic tones are frequently used throughout the entire piece.
The second piece is in E minor. It is an introspective Kujawiak marked Andantino.
The third piece, in B major, is marked Animato. An oberek is contrasted with a mazur characterized by the repetition of the same note in the middle section. It has a three-bar coda.
The fourth piece, in A-flat major, is marked Allegretto. It is an oberek with an inserted Kujawiak. The rhythm evokes something close to a waltz.
