The Four Mazurkas, Op. 24, were composed in Paris. By this time, Chopin had been active in Paris for four or five years and was entering a period of fulfillment as both a composer and a pianist.
No. 14 in G minor
A rustic mazurka that incorporates Polish folk melodies.
No. 15 in C major
A light and graceful piece. The middle section shifts to D-flat major, revealing a dramatic aspect.
No. 16 in A-flat major
A broad, bright, and charming short piece. The episodes that appear midway are also impressive.
No. 17 in B-flat minor
Among the many mazurkas, this is one of the most substantial masterpieces. An episodic section featuring unisons and chords appears midway; Chopin taught his pupils that the unison passages represent the female parts of a choir, while the chordal sections represent a mixed choir.
