Presto - Extremely Fast
In B minor, a major third below No. 3 (considering No. 3's E-flat major enharmonically as D-sharp major). B minor is an ominous key, and here too, the musical character is devilishly percussive, with the repeated F-sharp (the dominant) being particularly eerie (e.g., the opening anacrusis, measures 21, 25). The blissful B major middle section (from m. 52) is identical in its right-hand figuration to the extremely impressive, plaintively singing musical idea from the early Piano Sonata No. 7, second movement, from m. 36 (while the left hand features a 'Pastoral'-like figuration). Is Beethoven perhaps recalling and elevating an earlier work, thereby offering redemption?
