This work is preserved in a 19th-century manuscript titled 'Kleine Toccata'. It sequentially contains:
- Prelude in D minor, BWV 899/1 (from Five Preludes and Fughettas)
- Fugue in E minor, BWV 900/2
- the early version of Prelude in B minor, BWV 923a
- Scherzo in D minor, BWV 844
- Andante in G minor, BWV 969
- Presto in D minor, BWV 970
From the selected genres and arrangement, it is clear that these pieces were compiled as a cohesive collection; however, this does not align with the genres or structures typically employed by Bach. Instead, they are rather characteristic of the short pieces commonly found in the 19th century. Unfortunately, among these, only BWV 899 is definitively an authentic work by Bach.
The Scherzo features syncopation as its theme, but the overall rhythm is monotonous, and the characteristic rhythm of the theme is not fully exploited. An early version in E minor, BWV 844a, also survives, but it is believed to be a work by his eldest son, Friedemann.
