Included in the Clavier-Büchlein vor Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The three minuets are unified in G major and G minor, i.e., in the key of G. However, Minuet III, in particular, has an unusually low range for both hands, strongly suggesting it was transposed during revision.
The first two show a connection, for instance, in the motif of arpeggiated eighth notes. Furthermore, the motifs assigned to each hand are exchanged between the two pieces. Notably, Minuet I was also included in the first volume of the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach (composed around 1722, mostly lost).
Minuet III differs from the preceding two pieces in both its motifs and texture, and its performance difficulty is also elevated. The inherently light triple meter of the minuet is concealed within a continuous succession of rolling motifs, and there is a strong cantabile inclination. The sonorous, narrative melody is a work befitting the sound of Bach as he approached his mature period.
