Following the indication "Tempo di Minuet," this piece is written in a three-part A–B–A’ form, based on the classical dance form. Within a calm tempo, a graceful and delicate melody flows, meticulously expressing Barber's youthful sensibility.
In the middle section B, there is an instruction "poco più mosso e con spirito" (a little more movement and with spirit), requiring a change in expression. Here, the melody from A is transferred to the left hand, while the right hand quotes the middle section of Beethoven's "Minuet No. 2 in G major, WoO.10," creating a witty device that evokes a sense of humor. There is an interesting interplay as different musical worlds intersect, and a performance that emphasizes balance is required, cherishing the playful spirit without disrupting the musical flow.
Towards the end of section B, from measure 26, the music dramatically builds, reaching a climax. From the subsequent measure 31, the music returns to A’, where the melody is played with superimposed thirds, adding richness and fullness to the music. In contrast to the concise sound of the opening, the structure that leads to a deeper expression at the end is impressive. Overall, while adhering to classical forms, this piece shines with Barber's characteristic sensibility and wit.
