Although positioned early in Prokofiev's creative history, it is a highly complete piano concerto, combining both a well-balanced structure and original expression, and is indeed one of the most frequently performed piano concertos composed in the 20th century. Composition itself began in 1917, but due to Prokofiev's own emigration to America in 1918 and his exploration of various musical possibilities, primarily in New York and Chicago, its completion had to wait until 1921. At that time, Prokofiev found more opportunities in Chicago than in New York, and this concerto was premiered in December 1921, with himself at the piano and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Its structure follows the classical instrumental archetype: the first movement is in sonata form with an introduction, the second movement is a set of variations, and the third movement is in rondo form. The performance time is also concisely under 30 minutes. Within this framework, various musical elements are contrasted: sections with very clear tonality versus ambiguous ones, and rhythmic, vibrant passages versus quiet, lyrical ones. Furthermore, the elegant melodies that frequently appear in Prokofiev's works stand out. Another significant characteristic of this Third Concerto, in contrast to the preceding Second Concerto where the piano part was musically pushed to the forefront, is the highly balanced interplay between the piano and the orchestra.
The year 1921, when this piano concerto was premiered, was a momentous year in Prokofiev's early life, as it saw the successful staging of his first ballet, The Buffoon, and the premiere of his most beloved opera, The Love for Three Oranges. Piano Concerto No. 3 is a work that foreshadows Prokofiev's establishment of his style as a great 20th-century composer.
