In December 1912, the journalist René Puaux (1878-1937) contributed an article to Le Temps newspaper about the coronation of King George V of England as Emperor of India. The piece is said to have been inspired by the wording of that text. The moonlight, represented by a chordal motif based on the French folk song 'Au clair de la lune' in the opening two measures and a descending melody illuminating the ground from the sky, gradually expands its range and intensifies its light after a lively passage with dotted rhythms (measures 10-12). This intensity peaks in measures 28-31, after which it recedes to a faint glow.
