Befitting the opening of a children's fairy tale, the middle register and above are utilized. It is a relatively short overture.

The first theme, appearing in the violin at the beginning of the piece, is full of staccatos and leaps, seemingly depicting an innocent child frolicking. The second theme begins at measure 45. The piece is structured by the repetition of these two themes and is written in compound binary form (or sonata form without a development section). The constant alternation of multiple themes can be said to depict a child's whimsical actions and psychology.
