Composed when the composer was 23 years old, there are theories that it was written either in Vitznau, Switzerland, or in Moscow. Although it is a short piece of only 12 measures, its structure, which begins with repeated accelerando, ritardando, and a tempo markings, along with its melody, formed by an exquisite combination of intervals, ensure that it is never an unmemorable work.
