Composed during Scriabin's stay in Dresden on his first trip to Western Europe, when he was 23 years old. Scriabin told Josef Hofmann about this piece, stating, "The idea for this piece came to me when I was standing on a bridge in Bastei, Switzerland." This piece can be interpreted as having 5/8 x 3 beats per measure. The right hand is based on chords, and the left hand on octaves. Furthermore, in the right hand, an eighth rest or a tied note is placed on the first of every five eighth notes, and in the left hand, on the fourth.
