This piece was composed in Kyiv, where the composer was traveling, at the age of 17, while studying at the Moscow Conservatory. Both hands primarily feature octaves. A rhythm consisting of a dotted quarter note and an eighth note is followed by the other hand, displaced by one beat. However, this rhythmic displacement is made visually clear by the notation, which uses a tied quarter note and an eighth note instead of a dotted quarter note.
