Etude No. 9 introduces polyrhythms to the octaves in both hands through diverse note values such as sixteenth notes, eighth notes, and triplets. With a dynamic peak of 'ff' and closing with 'pppp', the piece expresses an extremely wide dynamic range. The middle section is chorale-like, and the displacement of beats between the left and right hands creates a certain sense of suspension. It is the largest-scale etude within Op. 8.
