In the Waking River is a multimedia work for piano and computer, but it can also be performed as a musical work for piano and electronic sounds, or as a piano solo work. The work's title is based on the poem Green Night by Japanese poet Taku Nagashima, and begins with the following lines:
In the waking river
Vomiting corrosive landscapes
On scorched earth burning sweat
The flower of duty, utterly hated
Embracing the covenant of night
When hanging the portrait of agony
The dream that strikes the horizontal coast carries inverted voices
In the heavy womb of the primeval forest
The scent of death sinking while trembling (...)
The composer attempted to express the youthful impatience depicted in the poem and the sensibility of words freely traversing the five senses through nervous piano movements and sounds containing fissures into another realm.
