A piece by German composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). It is widely popular in Japan, often used as an entrance song for brides and grooms at weddings. Various arrangers and composers have created adapted versions, including piano solos, throughout history. The “Wedding March” is the ninth of the twelve movements in Mendelssohn's incidental music, Op. 61, for Shakespeare's comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream, composed in 1843 at the request of King Frederick William IV of Prussia. A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy revolving around marital issues among human couples and the mischief of fairies. In the scene where the “Wedding March” is performed, the marital issues are successfully resolved, and a joyous wedding ceremony takes place. It expresses the happy conclusion of the story and its blessings.
