Ikuma Dan composed in a wide range of genres, but surprisingly few works were written for solo piano. Excluding early studies, his solo piano works were limited to only three pieces: "Piano Sonata in C" (1947), "NHK Radio Broadcast No. 2" (1952), and "Three Novelettes." At the time of composition, Dan was simultaneously working on chamber music, symphonies, and choral works with orchestra. Therefore, one can observe a tendency towards orchestral sonorities, transcending the boundaries of piano music, evident in the widely varying dynamics and the use of three-stave notation. The premiere was given by pianist Hiroko Nakamura (1944–2016).
The first movement, Allegro moderato, is composed of sections featuring passages that blend diatonic and chromatic intersections with diverse rhythmic patterns, and harmonic sections reminiscent of hymns, allowing various musical ideas to unfold freely. Furthermore, the melodies and motifs from the first movement are used throughout the entire work, suggesting an awareness of cyclic form. The second movement, Andante sostenuto e misterioso, is a highly lyrical, free three-part form. The third movement, beginning with Pesante, is a rondo that interweaves fanfare-like sections featuring powerful octaves and striking chords with perpetual motion sections marked Allegro leggero.
