This Mazurka, belonging to Fauré's early piano works, is believed to have been composed around 1875. It was published in 1883, and its premiere took place even later, in January 1886, at the Société Nationale de Musique, performed by Madame Bordes-Pène. At this concert, Nocturne No. 3 was also premiered by Madame Bordes-Pène, and both the Mazurka and Nocturne No. 3 are dedicated to Mademoiselle Adèle Baumolletz.
Many of Fauré's works show an affinity with Chopin's compositions in their titles, and this piece is one such example. However, such titles denote a genre, and their musical content varies among composers. In this work, written in Moderato B-flat major, the use of the mazurka rhythm remains superficial compared to Chopin's works. Furthermore, its length and formal structure also differ from Chopin's. Fauré's Mazurka takes the form of a ternary structure: 'ABA’ CCD A’B’'.
