This work was completed on August 6, 1920, one week after the composition of Humoresque, Op. 54(a), when Dora was 34 years old, and it is Dora's last piano miniature. For a long time, it remained in the form of a handwritten manuscript, but it was first published in 1978 by the Croatian Music Institute (Hrvatski Glazbeni Zavod). Initially, Dora named this Caprice, Op. 54(b), composed one week after Humoresque, Op. 54(a), as Second Humoresque, suggesting she considered these two pieces as a set; however, the reason for her change of title remains unclear. While many of her works are romantic and melancholic, this piece, along with Humoresque, Op. 54(a), reveals another facet of her artistry, characterized by humor and wit.
