In 1853, Brahms, who embarked on a concert tour with his friend, the Hungarian violinist Reményi, completed a set of variations with 13 variations and a coda by 1856, based on a theme he likely encountered during that tour. It is a set of variations characterized by the bright vigor and momentum typical of Hungarian dances.
The theme alternates between 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures every measure, creating a unique rhythmic feel. This time signature is maintained until the eighth variation, after which it transitions through 6/8 time to 2/4 time, with note values becoming increasingly subdivided towards the coda, which evokes a lively Czardas-like dance. After the rondo-like coda, the theme returns once more to conclude the work.
