In 2001, for the concert "For Children" organized by the Japan Federation of Composers (JFC), I composed the piano four-hand duet "A Seagull," and the following year, "Sunday Market." The pieces were very well received at the concerts, leading to a formal commission from Kawai Publishing several years later for a collection of piano duets. While solo pieces for children often present numerous constraints and challenges, four-hand duets allow for the easy creation of rich harmonies and dynamic rhythms, even with simple individual parts.
