Composed in Vienna in 1791. The theme of this variation is based on a melody composed by B. Schack for J. E. Schikaneder's play Der dumme Gärtner (The Foolish Gardener). Furthermore, the theme of this variation is somewhat longer compared to Mozart's other variations. Up to the fifth variation, a technique is employed where the first phrase of the theme is re-presented with minimal alteration before the remaining sections are varied. Moreover, this variation, which concludes by reproducing and recalling the theme, is a work of relatively large scale.
