Six Children's Pieces, Op. 72
This collection, alongside the "Songs Without Words", is one of the most frequently used pedagogical materials for children. Its difficulty level is comparable to sonatinas, allowing familiarity with Romantic music without requiring excessive technique. Each piece is a short composition, 1 to 4 pages in length.
- 1. G major / op.72-1 G dur (1842) Written in four voices. It is in ternary form with a middle section in D major. Play while bringing out the upper voice, also considering the balance with other voices. Also, be mindful of the coherence of phrases.
- 2. E-flat major / op.72-2 Es dur (1847) "Slowly, sustaining each note well." Bring out the melody, being careful that other notes do not interfere. Also, be mindful of the coherence of phrases.
- 3. G major / op.72-3 G dur (1842) Written in four voices. Similar to the first piece, consider the balance between the main melody and other notes. Also, enjoy the variations in articulation, such as staccato, slurs, and dotted rhythms, while playing.
- 4. D major / op.72-4 D dur (1847) Play while bringing out the main melody, feeling the transitions of the bass notes. Also, be careful that other notes do not interfere. Be mindful of the sense of meter and the coherence created by phrasing.
- 5. G minor / op.72-5 g moll (1847) Allegro assai. Played lightly with staccato articulation. Emphasize dynamics, and even with staccato, it would be good to use the body in a way that is mindful of the coherence of phrases.
- 6. F major / op.72-6 F dur (1847) Similar to the fifth piece, a lively piece characterized by staccato articulation. Even within its lightness, be mindful of the sense of meter and rhythm.
